Great Big Family Play Day
Free family festival with play zones, performers and activities.
San Diego with children
San Diego is an easy city to bring children to: one of the world's great zoos inside a park full of museums, a carrier to climb over on the waterfront, coves and calm bays for small swimmers, and two full day trips north. Done the local way, one big sight a day and the beach after, nobody has to be carried home.
Nothing on this page is tagged family on a guess. Events are here because their own listings promise family programming, and places because the attractions guide tags them suitable for children.
Babies and toddlers get the bays and the park lawns: Mission Bay's calm edges and Balboa Park's gardens ask nothing of anyone, and the Zoo's size means you can do a small corner of it well instead of all of it tired. Young children are LEGOLAND's size exactly: the Carlsbad park is built for them, rides and all, and wants its own full day. The Birch Aquarium is the compact half-day version of the sea: Scripps' own aquarium above La Jolla Shores. Older children can carry the big days: the Zoo at full length, the Safari Park's open plains up in Escondido, and the USS Midway, a whole aircraft carrier of ladders, cockpits and flight decks on the Downtown waterfront. And every age gets the water: La Jolla Cove for watching sea lions from the rail, Coronado's wide flat beach for everything else.
Cluster the days and the city gets small. Balboa Park holds the Zoo and most of the museums in one green, so one parking decision covers a full day. The waterfront strings the Midway, Seaport Village and the Gaslamp into one walkable strip. The two day trips, the Safari Park and LEGOLAND, sit up the coast from each other and each wants an early start and a day of its own. San Diego's weather is the famous part, but the sun is strong all year: hats and water are logistics here, not advice. Book the ticketed days ahead in summer and on school holidays; the free days, the beaches and the park grounds, need nothing but an early start for parking.
The family days out you can book ahead: the Zoo and the two big parks, the carrier on the waterfront and the aquarium above La Jolla Shores, and a tour or a cruise at some of the places that cost nothing to enter. Each card links to the place's own page here, with its admission basis and official site.
